Why a documentary ?

The 2015 United Nations Climate Conference in Paris is a key event of 2015. Political and industry leaders, civil society and media from around the world will converge on Paris Le Bourget. The insurance sector is particularly affected by the problem of global warming, as it bears a significant share of the cost of natural disasters, and costs are expected to increase in the future. This international conference is an opportunity to highlight these issues, to raise awareness of the various existing compensation schemes, to reflect on possible adaptations and to emphasize the need to prevent natural disasters and limit damages and associated costs.

Ivo HUX

Head of France, Benelux & Switzerland - Swiss Re

Ivo HUX is Head of France, Benelux & Switzerland for Swiss Re, a leading wholesale provider of reinsurance, insurance and other insurance-based forms of risk transfer. Based in Zurich, he oversees the client management and underwriting activities for one of the company's key regions. He is also a member of the Europe, Middle East & Africa (EMEA) Executive Team.

Ivo HUX joined Swiss Re in 1993 in Zurich as a Client Manager for Eastern Europe. Under his leadership he expanded Swiss Re's market presence particularly in Hungary, the Baltic countries and Russia. In 2001 he was appointed Operations Head for Division Europe. In 2005 he took on a new challenge as Head of the Executive Office for Client Markets, a global role in which he assumed direct responsibility for strategy and operations in the core commercial reinsurance activities. He relocated to Paris in 2008 when he was named CEO of Swiss Re France. He returned to Zurich in 2014 and assumed his current role.

Ivo HUX has studied in Zurich, Paris and St. Petersburg. He holds a PhD in Russian Literature from the University of Zurich and an MBA from the University of Chicago. His is a member of the Executive Committee of the French Federation of Insurance Companies (FFSA) and sits on the board of several insurance companies and pools in France and Switzerland. He is also a director of France's Reinsurance Association (APREF) and a board member of the Swiss Insurance Association (SVV).

Pierre BLAYAU

Pierre BLAYAU began his career in 1978 as an inspector of finance. He joined Compagnie Saint-Gobain as Head of Corporate Planning (1982-1984) before moving to the Pont-à-Mousson subsidiary as its Chief Financial Officer, and then served as its Chairman and Chief Executive Officer until 1993. He was Chairman of the Pinault-Printemps-Redoute Group’s Management Board from 1993 to 1995, and then moved to Moulinex where he held office as Chairman of the Management Board and Chairman and CEO from 1995 to 2000. Between 2001 and 2013, Pierre BLAYAU served as Chairman and CEO and then Chairman of the Board of Directors of Geodis, while also holding office as CEO of SNCF’s transport and logistics entity between 2008 and 2013. He was Chairman of the Areva Supervisory Board from 2013 to 2015. An ardent football fan, Pierre BLAYAU was Chairman of Stade Rennais from 1998 to 2000, Chairman of Paris Saint-Germain from 2005 to 2006 and Treasurer of the Ligue de Football Professionnel from 2003 to 2005. Pierre BLAYAU currently holds directorships with Société d’Edition de Canal Plus and Fimalac. He is an Officer of the Légion d’Honneur and an Officer of the Ordre National du Mérite.

Jean-Louis CHARLUTEAU

Jean-Louis Charluteau, 57, is graduated with a Master in law of the University Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne and the Institute of Paris.

He started his career in 1983 by working as a tied agents network manager for the company L’Union & Le Phenix Espanol. In 1986, he joined the French subsidiary of Zurich. First in charge of a commercial inspector network, he took the responsibility of the Agents network before becoming the head of the personal risk underwriting department.

He joined Generali France in 2001 as a Manager of the personal, artisan, commercial and service provider risks underwriting department. Successively, he has been nominated as Manager in 2005 and Director of the Reinsurance in 2011.

Since May 2014, Jean-Louis Charluteau has been working as a Director of non-life risks in charge of Internal Model (including catastrophe modelling) & Enterprise Risk Management (including Risk appetite & Reinsurance).

To meet the climate change challenge, Jean-Louis created internally a multidisciplinary team and manages today different profiles such as actuaries, geographers and climatologists.

Jean-Louis Charluteau is also a member of the Board of GFA Caraïbes and Prudence Créole, Director General of GRC (Generali Réassurance Courtage) and member of the Board of Directors of the Mission Risques Naturels.

Stéphane HALLEGATTE

Senior economist - World Bank

Stéphane HALLEGATTE is senior economist with the World Bank. His work covers macroeconomic dynamics and green growth strategies, urban economics and environmental policies, climate change vulnerability and adaptation, and disaster risk management. He is lead author of the Intergovernmental Panel for Climate Change for its Fifth Assessment Report. He co-led, with Marianne Fay, the World Bank reports “Inclusive Green Growth: The Pathway to Sustainable Development” and “Decarbonizing Development: Three Steps toward a Zero-Carbon Future.” He also published dozen of articles in international journals and several books, including “Natural disasters and climate change – an economic perspective.” Most recently, he led the World Bank report « Shock Waves: Managing the Impacts of Climate Change on Poverty ». Stephane HALLEGATTE holds an engineering degree from the Ecole Polytechnique and a phD in economics from the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales in Paris.

Jean-Marc SYLVESTRE

Journalist, the conference host

Jean-Marc SYLVESTRE was born in the French town of Alençon on 29 October 1946. After graduating from Paris-Dauphine University with a doctorate in economic sciences, he became a professor at Caen University. He began his career as a journalist in 1973 when he started writing for L'Expansion, and then for Management and La Vie Française magazines. Appreciative of his style and expertise, Le Nouvel Economiste took him on as editor-in-chief, a position he subsequently went on to hold at the Quotidien de Paris newspaper.

From 1986 on, Jean Marc SYLVESTRE turned his attention to radio and television, where as an editor on the France Inter radio station he presented a business and finance programme at 7.20 a.m. every morning for 22 years, from 1986 to 2008. The same year, he began appearing on the La Cinq television channel as a business and finance columnist. When La Cinq closed down in 1993, Étienne Mougeotte and Patrick Le Lay recruited him to head the business and social news section for the TF1 television channel.

In 1994 he was involved in the creation of LCI and started hosting a weekly programme, Décideur. From September 1997 to July 2010, he also hosted TF1's Club de l'économie programme. In July 2008, he became Deputy News Director at TF1 and LCI, with responsibility for business and social news. In 2008, the year of the crisis, Jean-Marc SYLVESTRE was named journalist of the year by the Paris-Dauphine jury. He is widely recognised for his pedagogical skills and ability to analyse and explain even the most complex economic situations.
In July 2010, he left TF1 to develop other activities in business and media. He continues to host the business programme, "Les Clés de l’Éco" on i>TELE each Sunday, where he invites the key figures in the news that week. In parallel, he has taken to the Internet with his own business and financial news and analysis blog.

More recently, Jean-Marc SYLVESTRE has begun to appear on BFM Business, where he writes and presents "Sagas d'Entreprise".
Jean-Mark SYLVESTRE has been a prolific writer throughout his career. His numerous books have made him well known to the general public, particular his three latest works on the subject of the crisis: Petites leçons d’économie à la portée de tous, La France piégée and Le roman vrai de la crise financière – written jointly with Olivier Pastré – this last book won the Turgot award in 2009.

Margareta WAHLSTRÖM

Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction and Head of the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction

In November 2008, the United Nations Secretary-General Mr. Ban Ki-moon announced the appointment of Margareta WAHLSTRÖM as his first Special Representative for Disaster Risk Reduction.

Ms WAHLSTRÖM has extensive experience in both disaster relief operations and disaster risk management, with the United Nations system and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.

Her broad experience spans conflict and non- conflict emergencies, and addressing long-term issues of sustainable development.
Ms WAHLSTRÖM is also the head of UNISDR, the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction, that is the focal point in the United Nations system for the coordination of disaster reduction. Under the SRSG’s leadership, UNISDR is in charge of supporting the implementation of the "Hyogo Framework for Action 2005-2015: Building the Resilience of Nations and Communities to Disasters" throughout the world and to facilitate the process of developing a post-2015 framework for disaster risk reduction.

Education and Training:
Mrs. RODRIGUEZ-PONGA holds a degree with honors in Economics and Business Administration by CUNEF (Universidad Complutense de Madrid) and a degree in Law by Universidad Europea de Madrid. She entered the Spanish Civil Service as an insurance supervisor and a finance inspector in 1989.

Work Experience: Mrs. RODRIGUEZ-PONGA began her career in the the Ministry of Economy and Finance as an insurance supervisor at the General Directorate of Insurance and Pension Funds (DGSFP) from 1989-1992, and then at the General Directorate of Taxes (1992-1995) where she was a Coordinator of the Domestic Financing Department. In 1995 she returned to the Insurance Supervisory Directorate (DGSFP) where she served as Deputy Director of Insurance and Legislative Policy (1995-2001) and as Deputy Director of Insurance Supervision (2001-2004). During these periods she was a member of the Board of Directors of CCS (1995-1997 and 2001-2004). In 2004 she joined Mutua Madrileña, a Spanish insurance company, as its Group Internal Audit Manager. Subsequently, she held other senior executive positions and served as a member of the Board of several subsidiaries within the group until she was appointed Head of the Spanish Insurance Supervisor.

Philippe DERIEUX

Deputy CEO - AXA Global P&C

Philippe DERIEUX has held several positions in the financial sector before joining AXA in 1997 as Shareholder Representative for Reinsurance and Large Risks subsidiaries.

In 1999, he became Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of AXA Cessions (reinsurance captive tool for the Group) and Head of Group Property & Casualty Technical Department. In 2007 he moved to Switzerland as a Member of AXA Winterthur’s Management Board in Switzerland and assumed the position of Head of Property & Casualty. He was appointed Deputy CEO of AXA Global P&C, Group Reinsurance Officer and Member of the Group P&C Board in 2011. Since 2008, he is also Vice Chairman of the General Insurance Committee at Insurance Europe.
